Lamma versus HKU - Match Report

Picture
A fine sunny down at Sandy bay for the 12 Lamma lads to take on HKU. We played 11 to field and all 12 bat. The team had a lovely mix of new and old, social and challenge players and one player who apparently has 99 Saturday league wickets but who’s counting.
We lost the toss and were bowling first, Woodsy and Vishal opened well. Especially VG who was nursing a strained back, unfortunately no wickets from the opening pair. Vikas and Benny Cooper were next up and still couldn’t make the break through. Finally, after 2 retirees Browny and Nitesh picked up a wicket a piece. It was too late though as the HKU boys powered (along the ground) to 169-7.
In high hopes of many retirees and players getting their batting season back on track we headed off in pursuit of the high total. It was not to be however collapsing to 13-4, Nitesh and VG steadied the ship for a while with VG retiring on 28 but we ended on 100-11 all out in 17 overs. A special shout out to Ricky who batted as softy and slowly as possible but was still 6-out with a half- punch down the ground. That bat is a beast!!!
That said we had a fun afternoon followed by food, beers and test match cricket in Frango’s.
Special shout outs:
VG 29
Nitesh 22
Ricky 6 - then 6 and out!
Browny 3-14
Rajesh 1-19 (5 wicket weekend for him)
Ben Cooper, Nitesh and Woodsy a wicket each.

Lamma Beach Cricket Sevens 2021-22: Pui O Beach - 30th October 2021

The 2021-22 Lamma Beach Cricket Sevens were held on October 30th at Pui O beach. The tide had just rolled out, which gave us the opportunity to play directly on the wet sand, and overcast skies helped keep the worst of the sun at bay – ideal conditions for a day full of cricket and shenanigans.
A total of 30 Lamma CC members signed up for this season’s Sevens, leading to 4 Lamma Teams – the Longnecks playing in Green and Gold, the Llamas in Pink, the Legends in Whites and the Lightning in bright orange singlets, made custom just for this event.
A great day was had, with plenty of fun for all involved. The cricket itself often veered from the brilliant to the absurd – Justin’s big hitting, Ricky’s canine companions and Woodsy’s falling flat on his back but still completing a catch were just some of the highlights. As the day wore on the tide closed in behind the batter’s end, and the Lamma CC batters - now emboldened by a drink or two - busted out a variety of scoops and switch hits into the sea, while the bowlers began to dig the ball into the wearing sand pitch. Ultimately it was the Longnecks and the Lightning who made it to the grand final, and a terrific back and forth game ended in a tie. In classic Lamma fashion, the champion was thereby determined by a Boat Race, the Longneck veterans getting their drinks down just a fraction quicker to secure a well deserved championship.
A big thank you to the 4 captains – Ollie, Jarrod, Samay and TP – for their organization, and to Boots for all his arrangement. A shout out also to Novy's Kitchen for providing the lunch, Southside Lantau for the dinner, and Yardley Brothers and Doublehaven Brewery for all the beers.

RIGGERS REPORTS
Social Match - HKCC Taveners v Lamma CC - HKCC
Friday 20 November

Birthday boy Royce McDonald not out 60
Catches win matches so they say
An unseasonable scorching hot day greeted the teams at HKCC for the Birthday Bash, Royce’s 60th. The cricket gods and the sun shining on Royce from the start, LCC winning the toss and to avoid the heat will bat.

Would the cricket gods continue in favour of Royce for his big day?

Reporting on the first spell of this match is quite tricky as I failed to make it to the ground on time. I put this down to a busy morning at work others might say that my bedraggled look and glazed eyes purported to a later than planned Thursday night out.

Looking at the scorebook, Messer’s P. Cooper and S. Vithlani opened the batting, sadly mustering not a lot in a long time, only 8 scoring shots between them in the first 35 balls; I didn’t miss much there then.

On my arrival to the ground, Mr Joyce was now at the crease looking debonair, sophisticated, purposeful, destructive and poised. I have to say this as he buys me rather nice bottles of red. He did back up some of those words by going about his business and shone as the batsman of the day, cruising to the 30 retirement and later to return, finishing not out on 42.

Lamma very steady in the middle order with Kieran and Sarge both making retirement, add in a quickfire 19 apiece for Muddy and God, LCC going well.

Next up, the man himself, Royce at the crease. I mentioned earlier the cricket gods, it was however another God that turned the tide on Royce’s day, Goddy running out the birthday boy. In fairness to God, it was pointed out to Royce that his youngest son Alan, at 8 years of age, runs faster than him. Riggers up next, in and out for one. It was also pointed out to Riggers that Royce’s youngest son Alan, at 8 years of age, scored more runs than him.

I can’t tell you the exact final LCC tally as the scorebook wasn’t completed, but from a hazy memory, I think it was a respectable 228.

Lamma in the field
Where do I go with this? Catches win matches so they say, not in this match they didn’t. The final tally was 9 dropped, one more than the age of Royce’s youngest son, Alan, at 8 years old. The bright side of this hash in the field was the bowling. A side packed full of bowling options, 10 bowlers used, all returning respectful figures, it was the line and length of this bowling that was producing so many mistakes from the Taverners bats.

Bowling to mention, Harling bending back middle stump with his first delivery of the day, Goddy with 3/27 and Brenton bowling a miserly spell of 4 overs 0/13, all this keeping the Taverners behind the rate.

The cricket gods by this stage had abandoned Royce completely, somehow Lamma contrived not to give Royce the birthday wicket he so wanted, catch after catch going down to his bowling with God himself spilling the easiest of chances. Royce did have the opportunity to rectify this himself with a CnB chance but it just wasn’t meant to be, crocodile hands snapping at the ball as another opportunity spilled onto the turf.

Lamma in the end securing victory by 16 runs.

The cricket gods having awakened to give LCC and Royce the birthday win.

The celebrations continued, a fine spread laid on by HKCC and with Royce leaving an open tab at the bar it was LCC heaven.

Brenton held court with an excellent fines session, punishing both the Taverners and LCC.

A special mention has to go to LCC’s current top supporter, a playing member of LCC who somehow, so far, has missed selection, a mix up in SL and CL availability, not of his own doing, a problem that has now been rectified by the EXCOM. Browny we salute you, Sir.

Royce's Report by Royce McDonald
Social Game - Lamma CC vs Rest of the World, Gin Drinkers Bay
11 July 2020

Picture
After some outstanding work behind the scenes in the week building up, Roycey managed to pull an opposition team out of his back pocket allowing 13 “frothing for cricket” Lamma champions to tackle the heat for the clubs second social of the season (in as many weeks).

Ice, ice and more ice was the priority on the pre-match agenda. The boys were so concerned about making sure the beers were cold that half forgot to buy beers at all.

Portsies debut captaincy began well after winning the toss, and duly accepted batting first as the best option for the state of affairs. Gin Drinkers Bay was in spectacular condition. The ground looking closer to resembling Lords with each passing year.

Onto the cricket. Toby (18) came out with heat as usual flashing a few balls to the fence before getting undone by a bottom edge onto the stumps. Riggers and Joycey were finding their feet before holing out to fielders on either side of the first drinks break before Suleman and Justin then began to steady the ship. The 6 over drinks break struck again when Justin went for 13 on the final ball while Muddy didn’t die wondering, having an early swipe at a perfect yorker leaving Lamma scrambling at 70 odd for 5 with none in the hutch.

Samay joined Suleman and they took it to the half-innings changeover with some constructive batting leaving things well poised at 98/5 after 18.

Lamma’s first bowling stint opened like a wet dream. In the opening stanza Sinclair fired in a full delivery outside off, the batsman took the bait with a big swipe. Riggers, who had positioned himself at a wide slip, proceeded to take an absolute blinder of a catch moving like a nimble mountain goat. Dirk, Muddy and Riggers put in an epic first spell collectively, leaving Ports to pray on two run-starved batsmen (a good back-peddling catch included from Samay).

Woodsy, Roycey, Justin and Ollie then mixed up the pace and created some good opportunities with two of ROWs best batsman at the crease. The match balanced slightly in the opposition's favour at the turn, 93/3 after 18 with two in the hutch.

The back 17 with the bat was anchored by Suleman getting to his 30 and retiring. Samay (20) and Sinclair (20) beefed up the total and scoring rate leaving Ports, Benny Cooper, Woodsy, Roycey and Ollie to put on 43 collectively with the bat through some great running between the wickets. Lamma CC 207 in their 35 overs.

The drama was left to the last quarter of the game. Behind on the clock, there was no time for drinks breaks, while the heat began to sink in. Suleman had taken gloves off Joycey and was straight into the game with some fine catching behind the stumps. Of the 5 catches made by SB, Riggers picked one with a great nut, Samay nicked off two and had another skied straight up for the gloveman to take care of business. In between there was a liquorice all sorts of a 2 over spell from Benny which produced a Quality Street in-swinging yorker (GET IN!). The celebrations from the bowler leaving the batsman unsure as to find the humor in it or fear for his well being. Such was the rush of wickets before we knew it the retirees were back, but Samay had different ideas. Removing Alam (31) with another gem nicked behind completing Suleman’s 5 catches and the second big stick, Naveed (37), straight down Port’s throat at long off.

At this point we believed the game had been won having removed both returning retirees, however a sneaky 14th batsman appeared from the woodwork. No one had the strength to argue. 17 needed off 18. After a couple wides and a boundary, Ports had his man caught at midwicket by a far less fleet-footed Rob Rigby at the end of proceedings. A fine catch no less and it was all smiles after a little Lamma drama.

ROW all out (by our count 13 wickets) 196
LAMMA won by 12 runs
MoM: Samay (20 runs + 5/22 in 4)

Great day out. Lamma victorious, but without doubt cricket was the winner.
Royce's Report by Royce McDonald
Social Game - Lamma vs HKU, Gin Drinkers Bay
5 July 2020

On a very hot sunny day, Lamma CC vs HKU got underway. The format was bat 12, field 12, bat 12, field 12 and then bat 11 field 11. Drinks breaks each 6 overs.

HKU won the toss and batted. Muddy and Will opened for Lamma Muddy getting the first wicket bowling pace. Riggers was first change and got a wicket as did Chucker. First break then kicked in.

Lamma batting and trying to get some retirees back in the Hutch. Tom Parker had a brain fade strolling back to his crease was run out. Will Banner out cheaply as well. Becksy and the Eagle saw us into the first change.

Back on the field with HKU batting Tom Parker, Vans and Horace taking the ball, runs coming quickly with big hitting but Horace striking twice to remove Rishi with a ball that turned at least half a metre and dropped onto the top of the stumps of Rishi. Amazing!

Junior took a catch behind, Lamma still in the game.

Lamma back out batting but wickets fall quickly with Becksy on 28, The Eagle on 19 departing. Muddy made a very quick 32 and retired. Woodsy faced a few balls and out with a six. Royce joined Riggers to the break.

HKU back in and Muddy, Riggers and Royce having impact with wickets falling.

Will Banner took a great catch at long off. 9 wickets down but 246 would prove too much in the end but Lamma would not go down without a fight.

Royce and Riggers batting, Royce out cheap, Chucker accumulating runs but Riggers out not long after. Vans out for 3 and Horace out for a golden duck. Game to HKU.

Notables Batting:
Mudassir 32*
Ian Beck 28
Justin “The Eagle” 19
Riggers 11
Bowling:
Mudassir 3-41 off 7 overs
Horace 2-22 off 3 overs
Royce 2-25 off 4 overs

Lamma MOM – Muddy well played with Bat and Ball.
Thanks to all the Lamma guys who turned up for the day.

Philippines International Sixes,
Lamma C.C.’s thriller in Manila

Report by Woodsy, Videos by Mark "Sincs" Sinclair
November 16-17, 2019

Picture
Picture
Overcoming the obstacles in getting a team to Manila and beating the odds in being crowned Philippines 6's Bowl champions!

Our Lamma CC team arrived in dribs and drabs with Chucker and skipper, Mark “Dirk” Sinclair, getting the drinking ball rolling. By the time Woodsy and Dave “Zedman” Zielkhe arrived just after midnight, copious amounts of booze had been consumed, midget boxing had been officiated and happy zombies had given the locals a bit of a fright.

The next morning the team was complete when Akbar and our esteemed ring-in, Faihaan “Fabio” Ahmed, joined us all. We battled through Manila’s traffic making our way to the venue, Club United (clubunited.ph/). The club is a magnificent facility complete with club house, excellent facilities and, importantly, a lush green outfield where all the cricket action unfolds.

The tournament consisted of teams from Hong Kong, Singapore, Shanghai, Bahrain and several locally based teams who were all champing at the bit to get amongst it.

Here’s how Lamma CCs matches unfolded:
Game #1 vs H&J Agilas
Lost the toss, fielded first. Some ordinary fielding. Chucker forward – take the catch, backward – stop the ball and repeat, did neither; Dirk through the legs boundary; Zedman’s stint at wicket keeping was short-lived (over to you, Fabio). 69 the target. We fell 10 runs short in our chase. Akbar the star with the bat smashing his way to 34* and hitting 3 massive 6’s along the way.

Game #2 vs HK Avengers
Won the toss, batted first. Mark retired; Akbar posted a not out score in the high 20's a competitive total of 61 with no wickets lost. Avengers reached the total on the second last ball of their innings. We were left to wonder what might have been had their fielders been a tad more honest and if we had bowled a few less extras.

Game #3 vs Manila Roos
Won the toss, batted first. Akbar again the star with his 3rd undefeated knock, once again in the high 20's. Solid total of 59 posted. Free flow beers commence during the change of innings – woohoo! Like spinach for Popeye, this was the turning point for the match and indeed the tournament. Outstanding all round effort in the field this time, bowling the Roos out for 25! Fantastic way to finish the day for us as the tournament continued under floodlights.

A second night on the tiles ably led by Manila Roos legend, Shaun, left a few team members a little the worse for wear. We were stoked to learn early the next morning that our efforts on day one were sufficient to see us through to the second tier ‘Bowl’ play-offs in the knock out stage of the event.

Game #4 Bowl Semi-final v Caps & Tabs
Lost the toss, sent in to bat. It looked like we saved our worst batting performance of the tournament for this important game. Lamma restricted to a very sub-par 37. Akbar dismissed cheaply for the first time in the tournament with his batting average over 100 and a 200+ strike rate. We were now totally up against it. A tight bowling effort was needed. Dirk and Aky bowled two very tight ones to begin, followed by some equally tight bowling from Chucker and Zedman in the middle overs. 12 needed from the final over. With Mark struggling to walk from a mozzie-bitten and infected ankle, we had substitute fielder and occasional tour guide, Shaun, on the field covering for him. Shaun was in the action, resolving a stoppage in play as our opponents argued with match officials about a decision that had already gone their way. Minutes passed until Shaun, screamed at the batsmen “face up or f*** off ya f***ing c***ts!” The final 5 ball over was underway and went like this: 1W..6. Lamma with an improbable 5 run win was in the Final of the Bowl – get in! Woodsy later remarked, “That’s the first time I’ve ever enjoyed being smashed for a 6”.

Game #5 Bowl Final v Cubao CC
Our opposition for the Bowl Final was a team who had been overall champions at this tournament for the last 3 years running. No one except for Lamma expected Lamma to win. We won the toss and batted. A slightly below par total of 48 posted with extras fighting with Zedman for top score. Dave and Fabio smashing a couple of very memorable 6’s – Fabio’s arguably the shot of the tournament. Again, some tight bowling needed and very tight bowling delivered. Wickets falling all over the place as the run rate climbed and our oppo imploded. 27 needed off the last over. It went like this: 1W.W with Aky’s bucket-like hands appropriately taking both catches at deep mid-on. A comprehensive victory!

Lamma CC are now the Philippine Sixes Bowl Champions – the first international side to win a trophy at this event. Now then, where’s that free-flow?

Lamma CC would like to thank the Philippines Cricket Association for organising this outstanding event. Special thanks to Faisal, Evan, the scorers, announcers and umpires who all did a splendid job.
A fantastic weekend of friendship, fun and cricket!

Yardley Brothers Brewery Tour
Friday, 1 November 2019

Picture
A Friday evening brewery tour of our good sponsor's, Yardley Brothers was too good to pass up for a group of LCC's craft beer afficianados (a.k.a. p**s heads) and it was an informative and very enjoyable visit.

Not the easiest place to find, hidden in the industrial area of Kwai Chung, but once in their cosy brewery - and cosier bar - the travelling was well worth it.

Yardley Bros turn out some fantastic craft beer - and some off the wall crazy ones too, non more so than the Thai Chilli Getaway Sour and the Cardamom Wheat. The Peanut & Chocolate Stout was delicious but I think must of us were more happy settling down with the free-flow of regular ales. I should mention the range of craft beer Yardley Bros produces from their compact brewery is far bigger than the six that was on offer to us that evening, and if you want to know more about their beers then do visit their website at www.yardleybrothers.hk/our-beers

During the evening we made a small presentation to Yardley Bros with a speech from our Chairman and a presentation of an LCC pennant which was well received. Chucker proved he could organise a p**s up in a brewery.

A big thanks goes out to Luke and his team for taking such good care of us until late in the evening when we all stumbled out to make our way home after a fill of fantastic craft beer.

We shall certainly look forward to gathering in the Yardley Bros Beer Shack in Yung Shue Wan once it's up and running.
Cheers for the fantastic craft beers!

Fantastic day boys! For me this is one of the best days on Lamma CC’s calendar. Wifey enjoyed the day as well, and as bummed as we are to leave the BBQ early, she said that next year we should book a hotel room in Mui Wo and have a weekend staycation here so we don’t have to leave early 😀.
Thank you Mui Wo boys for organizing this and congrats on your 4peat!
Many thanks go out to the organisers who help make it the great event it is - Boots, Brenton, Seany & Chucker, and a special mention to Riggers who selflessly contributed even though he was unable to be part of the competition.

Thanks also goes out to everyone that made it over, and in particular the partners and friends that came along to support. We hope to include a WAGs game next year, so get training!

Philippines International Cricket Sixes 2109

The tour is on and we are finalising details for this fun and very affordable weekend tour to Manila. Don't miss out!

Flying out on Friday 15th November and returning on the evening of Sunday 17th means no holiday time needs to be taken.

Coupled with comfortable accommodation in Makati, in the heart of Manila and within easy reach to the ground, this trip's a winner.

The ground has not seen our Club represented there since 1994 when Lamma CC had its very first tour there. We're quite a different animal now and return to bring back some silverware.
