The Men’s Intra-Lamma
Barco v Devils

Going back a few months to May this year, we had the game planned nicely to coincide with my Birthday. Unfortunately we had bad luck with the weather. This time we were blessed with perfect conditions.
An absolutely brilliant blue sky welcomed the day in and so the day was set. All were up and eager for the day’s festivities to begin and the anticipation was running high.
It started with a few cold beers at around mid-day. People were making their way from far and wide. Arriving at the ground, I found Toby in his expected state and was therefore very keen to have him in my side. (I hate it when he’s had a quiet night beforehand). All we needed now were the cold beers and the format to be chosen!
The 2 skippers, myself and Chucker, went off to decide the teams. Working out that 12 a side would be ideal - we had a slight conundrum with 25 players! We thought that in a perfect situation one player could bat for both sides and score the same amount of runs. Up stepped Rajan and he duly obliged, 2 ducks within 3 balls, matter settled.
The skippers then had playground duties to select the players. Chucker getting first pick because of seniority, failed to register Toby’s state and missed him. All was plain sailing from then on. Two sides of 12, Rajen batting for both.
Chucker won the toss, elected to bat and then sent out his big guns. With only 25 runs needed before retirement, it meant that there would be some quick changeovers. Lama being the first to head back undefeated. Runs were being notched up fairly rapidly, and the Devils amassed a creditable 105 at the half way stage with a fair few wickets in hand. Neil almost made the retirement stage had he not decided to stay for extra runs after reaching his Quarter-Century; skying the ball four floors high before falling safely into the pouches of Gaffa. Off you go sonny! Johnny-2-curries, appearing for what could be his last game in a Lamma shirt, managed to get the runs without too much bother and so did surprise packet Pete, but that was about it from the Devils, a total score of 216. Questions were asked about the validity of the score as it seemed a little high, but a fair few extra’s were given. So we all paused for reflection, drunk some more beer and got ready for the second half.
Barco got off to a steady start and quickly had 2 retirements in Kev Mac and Adam. Smithy produced a cameo, unfortunately we all missed it. Toby breezed in and out again as he does. I thought he had forgotten something, but it turned out he had retired. Job done! Brad was Steady Eddie another one back in the pavilion without a hitch. 140 or so at the turn, all over!
More beer at the drinks interval - a total of 5 slabs drunk and more to be bought – thirsty work this cricket lark. The final session of the day saw a great catch from Charlie almost pipping Johnny-1-catch with a tremendous pluck from behind him. Some safe hands were shown from Ryan with 3 catches in the deep. A welcome return to the fold for Daryl who ground out 30 runs. A tighter fielding display, with none of the Devils overthrows. All in all a great day out for all.
We were handsomely supported by an enthusiastic crowd. There was a great supporting cast from Jashan and the music would have been the icing on the cake, if some plonker had decided to buy the copper-headed batteries instead of some cheapies! (He has since been severely reprimanded and handed a 2 match suspension from battery duty).
All departed to the winners enclosure, and once Toby had found the bag (or the taxi) we were off and running again late into the night.
Of course a special mention must go out to Chucker for the bulk of the organization. A special, special mention to our youth policy, with Darshan and Charlie accrediting themselves well. A triple special to Barco The Man, who was on his way home as the game started!
Finally a big farewell to Johnny-2-Go-Home. We wish his speedy return.
Let’s do it again soon. Sorry if I have missed anything and anybody. I’m an old man and the memory’s fading.
Prizes:
Best Batsman Toby White
Best Bowler Gaffa
Best Catch Johnny-Come-Home
Best regards,
Gaffa
