26 February 2023 - LCC vs HKU - Match Report
On a sunny day at Sandy Bay the two captains (Nikhil and Nitesh) amicably decided to forego the formality of the toss and agreed that Lamma CC would bowl first. We wanted to bowl first for three important reasons:
1) Make sure that we get through 20 overs of bowling (as batting first in foreign conditions carries the risk of getting skittled for a low score)
2) Chasing should (in theory) be easier on a small ground, and
3) We wanted to get the 'hard part' of the game out of the way and get onto the beers sooner.
The classic Sandy Bay rules were in effect - no sixes (hit one and you're out), max 3 overs per bowler, 25 run retirement and max 10 balls in an over. We played on a flicx pitch on the astro grass - somewhat unfamiliar conditions for most of the side - with a pink Dweller ball - which held up relatively okay throughout the innings.
We started off up with Browny (right arm medium) and Jordan (right arm slightly quicker than medium) with Justin Barret travelling all the way from China to keep wicket for us on the rough astro (what a hero). HKU opened with the dangerous pair of Tiran and Pandu, two veterans who know this ground well. Browny struggled a bit in his first over, but Jordan got Pandu nicking behind first ball, and the following over Tiran drilled Browny for a straight six (and out) down to long off! HKU were 40 after 4 overs but with their two best batters already dismissed.
Vikas (Right arm wheels) and Riggers (right arm tall outswing) were our change bowlers. They kept it tight and caused the HKU batters some problems, with Vikas beating Subbu for pace to wreck his stumps in his 2nd over! After 8 overs HKU were 63/3, with Mukesh and Mehram batting well.
We then swapped over to Rajesh (RM) and Woodsy (RFS) for 3 overs each through the middle of the innings. The HKU batting pair negotiated them well, Marham retiring after just 12 balls and Mukesh after 29. But that was the best of HKU's batting done, and we began to apply the squeeze. Woodsy picked up Nikhil (bowled) and Rakesh (LBW), and after 17 overs HKU were 134/5. Nitesh (right arm mystery spin) and spearhead Browny bowled the final 3 overs, and ensured that we would be chasing less than 150. HKU's batting ran out of steam and a concentrated effort to keep the retirees retired saw us needing only 147 to win. Game on!
Rigger and Mary opened the batting for us and got us off to a bright start, with 21 runs in the first 2 overs! Then chaos. A scampered single had seemingly become an easy two after an overthrow, only for Marham to throw down the stumps at the striker's end with a direct hit, catching Riggers short as he ambled back home! Lamma 23/1 after 3.
Justin came in at 3 at batted with class, while Mary got stuck in and ran the quick singles. Lamma's 50 came up in the 8th over, and all was well with the world. However, Mary got stumped next ball, and things drastically unfolded from there.
Not satisfied with his 200 SR retirement and direct hit runout, Marham now wanted to have his say with the ball. He delivered the 9th over, firing the ball in at a deceptively quick pace from a short runup. Justin put the first ball away for 4, but was then adjudged out LBW by Vikas next ball, out for 23! Vineet was the new batter in and was out LBW too first ball - both Marham and Vikas now on a hattrick! That's when we took the strategic decision of sending Riggers in the replace Vikas as umpire, but it did not stop the rampaging Marham, who bowled Jordan with a yorker to complete his hattrick! Browny was sent up the order as Vikas hadn't finish padding up, and played the first ball well to backward point, with AJ calling him through for a quick single. But he wasn't quick enough to beat Subbu's arm, and was run out for a duck without facing a ball! 4 wickets in 4 balls, and just like that we had lost half our side! Vikas survived the last ball of the over, Lamma now 54/6 in 9 overs.
Browny tried to put the lessons from coach Luke Jones into use, going deep into his crease to negotiate Ani's loopy spin, but took it a bit too far and cut his own stumps - out hit wicket in the 12th over! 7th man out with just 66 on the board.
Rajesh joined Vikas and they rebuilt well, both bringing up their retirement scores! But we struggled to keep up with the asking rate, as HKU bowled and fielded smartly. We managed to survive the 20 overs but only managed 125/8, falling short by 21 runs.
Positives: Good batting by Vikas and Rajesh, good bowling and fielding overall, and playing the game in gold spirit (especially with our LBW and Run Out decisions ;) ).
Areas for improvement: 31 wides (vs 13 wides and 4 no balls by HKU) and 4 wickets in an over. Always tough to win a game after that!
Overall a fun day out. Everyone got to bat (except AJ 😅) and everyone who wanted to bowl got a bowl. Hope you all enjoyed!

A fantastic weekend of friendship, fun and cricket!
A Friday evening brewery tour of our good sponsor's, Yardley Brothers was too good to pass up for a group of LCC's craft beer afficianados (a.k.a. p**s heads) and it was an informative and very enjoyable visit.
Not the easiest place to find, hidden in the industrial area of Kwai Chung, but once in their cosy brewery - and cosier bar - the travelling was well worth it.
Yardley Bros turn out some fantastic craft beer - and some off the wall crazy ones too, non more so than the Thai Chilli Getaway Sour and the Cardamom Wheat. The Peanut & Chocolate Stout was delicious but I think must of us were more happy settling down with the free-flow of regular ales. I should mention the range of craft beer Yardley Bros produces from their compact brewery is far bigger than the six that was on offer to us that evening, and if you want to know more about their beers then do visit their website at www.yardleybrothers.hk/our-beers
During the evening we made a small presentation to Yardley Bros with a speech from our Chairman and a presentation of an LCC pennant which was well received. Chucker proved he could organise a p**s up in a brewery.
A big thanks goes out to Luke and his team for taking such good care of us until late in the evening when we all stumbled out to make our way home after a fill of fantastic craft beer.
We shall certainly look forward to gathering in the Yardley Bros Beer Shack in Yung Shue Wan once it's up and running.

Another great LCC day out, the golden castle dedicated to the memory of Richie Abbott. Round-Robin
Plastic Spade Final Swashbucklers vs Sea Lions Won by 4 wickets
Golden Castle Final Buccaneers vs Mutineers Won by 1 wicket Samay Many thanks go out to the organisers who help make it the great event it is - Boots, Brenton, Seany & Chucker, and a special mention to Riggers who selflessly contributed even though he was unable to be part of the competition.
Thanks also goes out to everyone that made it over, and in particular the partners and friends that came along to support. We hope to include a WAGs game next year, so get training!

Philippines International Cricket Sixes 2109
The tour is on and we are finalising details for this fun and very affordable weekend tour to Manila. Don't miss out!
Flying out on Friday 15th November and returning on the evening of Sunday 17th means no holiday time needs to be taken. Coupled with comfortable accommodation in Makati, in the heart of Manila and within easy reach to the ground, this trip's a winner. The ground has not seen our Club represented there since 1994 when Lamma CC had its very first tour there. We're quite a different animal now and return to bring back some silverware. |
