Riggers Report by Rob "Riggers" Rigby
HKU v Lamma
Sunday 15 December
Venue: Sandy Bay Oval
A day which was all the about the numbers, a day when the numbers finally added up, a team collective.
The week started badly for Captain Riggers, availability being the issue, the number available being 8, The captain being forced to look further afield to find the extra 3, emails and messages were sent. Please welcome Lamma’s 3 guests for the day. Mr Noah Mansbridge, Mr Jesse Mansbridge and Mr Sandeep Shenoy.
Lamma now with the full complement of 11, let battle commence, with Lamma already 2-0 down in the 5-match series this was a must win.
With the toss lost, Lamma to field.
Noah to open the bowling, just marking out his run up was causing a stir among both LCC and HKU, a run up most certainly longer than 17 yards, 17 being the age of LCC’s guest opener. Steaming in Brett Lee-esque, the HKU batsmen had something to think about along with Tarry behind the stumps who was also been given a work out. Sharing bowling duties was Riggers, 32 years the senior bowler, and who certainly isn’t Brett Lee-esque or anything esque for that matter, ably assisted with some line and length. The first wicket to fall brought great delight to all LCC, the scorebook to read, bowled Noah, caught Jesse, the brothers Mansbridge showing their quality early on.
Now I spoke earlier of the team collective, no one bowler was a standout, everyone chipping in a little, lots of little equals a lot, 9 bowlers used, pace from Noah, shape from Jesse, niggles from Chucker and Jason, good spells of spin from Woodsy, Suleman and a fine spell from Ollie. The fielding would be the standout, people really committing to everything, Jason at deep square leg, Ollie on the 45 saving runs, Suleman and Noah mid on/off were excellent, Riggers saving runs in the covers, great stuff gents. Chucker however provided the laugh of the day after massively misjudging a skier and watching the ball spin past and then trickle over the boundary for 4. Upon the retrieval of the ball by an opposition player, our very own Godders, who threw it back at pace but sadly only making it as far as the back of Chucker’s head, that lovely resounding hollow thud of leather on skull resonating around the ground, the only person not finding this highly amusing being of course Chucker.
A moment of LCC quality is worth a mention, after what looked to be a great run out and with the batsmen trudging back to the dugout, Tarry recalled him stating that he didn’t have the ball under control when he broke the stumps; fair play Mr Tarr.
HKU managing to finish on a total of 221 leaving the LCC boys scratching their heads a little as how such a competitive total was amassed. 222 to win then.
Lamma with a new opening pairing of Suleman and Jesse, a combined age of only 35, thirty-five being the magic retirement number under HKU rules at Sandy Bay, with Suleman aged 21 and Jesse only 14, could this young pair deliver. Deliver is exactly what they did, managing to nullify the dependable HKU bowling attack and never looking in doubt, playing some fine cricket strokes and with excellent running both cruising to the magic 35 retirement figure; two Lamma bats safely back in the hutch. Next pairing was Tarry and Lamma debutant Mr Sandeep Shenoy. Now these two continued the rich vain of form showed by the previous 2, effortlessly working the ball for runs. I didn’t really want to have a standout performance today as I believe it was a total team effort, but Sandeep’s knock of 35 from only 22 balls including 8 crafted fours was exceptional. Welcome to Lamma, Sandeep, a standout display with the bat. With both men moving on to 35 and retirement. Lamma was now in the dizzying position of having 4 men back in the hutch and with the run rate happily matching that of the HKU innings, the team were starting allow the belief of a victory.
Noah at the crease now and managing to cruise to a healthy 19 before a bad call brought about his demise, still, a good knock. Lamma losing its first wicket on 184, really?! I said it was a day of numbers. What could stop Lamma now? The bloody light was the answer to that, with conditions deteriorating rapidly and with 4 men in the hutch the decision was made for the lower order to rotate strike, take all singles and just keep the scoreboard ticking, a sacrifice knowing we had plenty left in the tank. So, it was Justin, Woodsy, Riggers, Owen and Olly who took the team to within sight of victory, it was, however, Chucker who took the team over the line in the final over in the dark with a swipe for 4 runs letting the pace of the ball do the work, thus securing a great win for Lamma.
A very happy skipper, cheers gents, a great game, a day when the numbers added up.
